Being asked for very sensitive documents, and more of them...

Almost a month ago PayPal asked me to upload a scan of my drivers license and a bank statement to prove who i am, and to prove my postal address. This is after more than a decade of using PayPal with NO issues at all. With great reluctance, I guard my personal data very carefully... (PayPal had put a temporary stop on my account until I uploaded these docs, without any explanation why they were needed) I uploaded the drivers license and the bank statement. 3 weeks later I have received NO communications from PayPal and my account has not been reactivated. Today I called the UK phone number and after 1 hour reached a person. It was one of the most concerning calls I have had about my personal data, with any company. The guy told me I had uploaded the docs to a fake website. After insisting, he "located" the documents. Then commented the my bank balance at one stage during the bank statement I provided, showed a negative balance. He then said that the back office had "rejected" the bank statement. This is a scan of an original document, showing my bank acc number and sort code, as well as my address. He refused to say why the statement was "rejected", insisting that I needed to upload another bank statement or CC statement to "confirm my address" My address, bank details, and drivers license are now in the hands of PayPal, but he claimed that more was needed. This is already equal to the amount of personal information I would need to rent an apartment. The address is exactly the same on both documents.  When I asked which document was needed, another bank statement or CC doc (he had said both at one stage) he couldn't choose.  When I asked why no one had been in touch for 3 weeks, he refused to answer. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, he hung up on me.... Has anyone else had a similar experience???
